Safety of Chinese Herbs For Companion Animals

The formulation of CMD Pet Solutions is guided by the principals of Chinese Medicine Dermatology (a specialty subdivision of Chinese Herbal Medicine).  Safety is as important as efficacy.

CMD Pet Solutions crafts 100% natural products and all our herbs are pharmaceutical grade. We source our herbs from U.S.-owned companies. Every herbal ingredient is thoroughly tested for botanical identity and to ensure it is free from pesticides, heavy metals, and pathogenic microbes (bacteria, yeast, molds).

Our herbal supplements are compounded formulations of herbs. The formulas are balanced so that if any herb has the potential to cause an unwanted side effect (such as digestive upset, for example), there is an herb added to the formula to counteract this unwanted effect.

All the herbs in our internal herbal supplements are safe for use in animals. Quantities of individual ingredients and suggested daily dosing of the supplement formulas are based on standard industry guidelines of Chinese Veterinary Herbal Medicine.

CMD Pet Solutions supplements have a very wide margin of safety when it comes to dosing. Dosing guidelines provided with each supplement are based on the weight of the pet. Senior pets and those with weaker constitutions should generally take lower doses.  Dosing should be discussed with your pet’s veterinarian for best results.

The duration of supplementation depends on the ailment being addressed. This most certainly should be discussed with your pet’s veterinarian. For chronic/recurrent conditions, we offer several formulas – for the active phase and for the maintenance (or “stabilization”) phase.

Herbal supplements generally are safe to take alongside most common pharmaceutical medications (this is one reason we say CMD Pet Solutions are integrative), but never do so without consulting your pet’s veterinarian. The use of internal herbal supplements in breeding or pregnant animals should only be done under the supervision of your pet’s veterinarian.

All ingredients in our external products are safe for external use on the skin. In addition, our external products are generally safe enough to cause no harm if they are accidentally ingested in small amounts – a unique consideration when formulating products for animals since they have the tendency to lick the substance off their skin or fur. The exception to this alcohol-based tinctures which should not be accidentally consumed by cats in any amount. Products containing tea tree oil should only be used on cats when treatment is recommended and supervised by a veterinarian.

To craft our external products, we source the highest quality organic oils, butters, and other ingredients. We NEVER use petroleum-based ingredients, artificial fragrances, artificial colorants, parabens, corticosteroids, or harmful synthetic ingredients of any kind.
